FETA URGED TO INCREASE FISH FINGERLING PRODUCTION

The Deputy Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries, Dr. Edwin Mhede, has called on the Fisheries Education and Training Agency (FETA) to scale up the production of fish fingerlings in order to meet the high demand across the country.

Dr. Mhede made the remarks on January 29, 2026, during his visit to FETA’s Mbegani Main Campus, where he toured various ongoing activities as well as learning and teaching infrastructure.

“I commend you for this hatchery work and fish farming in general. However, I urge you to further increase the pace of fingerling production so that they can reach areas with high demand while also generating income for the institution,” said Dr. Mhede.

He further advised FETA to invest in aquaculture particularly cage fish farming in various locations, including Lake Victoria and Lake Tanganyika, with the aim of expanding practical training through demonstration farms as well as commercial production to boost revenue.

Earlier, FETA Chief Executive Officer Dr. Semvua Mzighani noted that the agency is currently offering both short- and long-term training programmes in aquaculture to enable citizens and the nation at large to better benefit from opportunities within the Blue Economy. Priority areas include fish farming, sea cucumber farming, crab fattening, and seaweed cultivation.

During his visit, Dr. Mhede had the opportunity to inspect several teaching and learning facilities, including the fish fingerling hatchery, ponds for farming tilapia and catfish, fish and seaweed drying areas, the health clinic, and the Department of Fisheries and Marine Studies. He also interacted with students pursuing studies in Fisheries and Marine Engineering.
