The Head of the Catholic Church worldwide, Pope Leo XIV, has pledged to pray for peace and stability in Tanzania following the unrest that occurred on October 29 last year. The Pope also revealed that he once lived in Tanzania, specifically in the regions of Morogoro, Dar es Salaam, Ruvuma, and Arusha.
Pope Leo XIV made the commitment after a request was formally presented to him by the Minister for Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation, Ambassador Mahmoud Thabit Kombo, during an official visit to the Vatican, where he delivered a message from President Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan.
Ambassador Kombo met Pope Leo XIV on Wednesday, January 28, 2026, a few hours before the Pope’s catechesis at the Vatican.
In a separate engagement, Ambassador Kombo and his delegation also held talks with the Vatican Secretary for Relations with States, Archbishop Paul Gallagher, who, among other matters, conveyed an official invitation from the Holy See for Tanzania to establish a diplomatic mission at the Vatican. Currently, Tanzania is represented through its Embassy in Italy.
