UGANDA ARMY CHIEF MUHOOZI APOLOGIZES TO U.S., AFFIRMS MILITARY TIES REMAIN STRONG

Uganda’s Chief of Defence Forces (UPDF), General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has apologized to the United States following earlier social media remarks that questioned the ongoing military cooperation between Kampala and Washington.

In a post shared on X on Friday morning, General Muhoozi said he had deleted the earlier messages after realizing the information he relied on was inaccurate. He added that he had spoken directly with the U.S. Ambassador to Uganda and confirmed that bilateral military and diplomatic relations remain intact.

“I have spoken to the U.S. Ambassador and everything is fine. We will continue our military cooperation as usual,” Muhoozi wrote.

Previously, the army chief had accused the U.S. Embassy in Uganda of assisting opposition leader Robert Kyagulanyi, popularly known as Bobi Wine, to leave his residence in Magere during a military operation conducted on the night of January 16, 2026, a day after the general election.

Muhoozi, who is also the son of President Yoweri Museveni, later retracted the claims, describing them as based on misleading information. His apology is seen as an effort to ease diplomatic tensions and preserve strategic ties between Uganda and the United States.
